Azumarill Pokémon GO Guide | Battle League Moves & Counters

Azumarill is very popular in the Go Battle League—with PvPoke ranking it third in the Great League as of the current metagame. With its max CP of 1816, the dual Water/Fairy-type Pokémon is viable in the Great League, where it’s one of the best ‘mon out there.

Azumarill GO Battle League moveset analysis

Your strategy for Azumarill is simple: Take a few hits, charge up energy quickly, and launch appropriate Charged Attacks. It’s excellent as a lead, switch, or closer—due to its tankiness and only three weaknesses. There are no special effects in its attacks—simply charge up and go.

Azumarill is amazingly bulky. The Great League is swarmed with high HP and DEF Pokémon, and Azumarill comes out on top—defensively. Generally speaking, if the sum of DEF and HP and higher than the ATK stat doubled, it’s good for PVP. The ideal Azumarill would have max EVs for HP and DEF and an ATK as low as possible. I run a 4/15/15 set, and it’s pretty darn good!

My own Azumarill in Pokémon Go: the Great Azu!

Bubble is the go-to Fast Attack for Azumarill in Pokémon GO battles. It charges hits 2.33 damages and charges 3.66 energies per turn (0.5 seconds). Damage is below average, but energy charges up quite quickly. Plus, Azumarill benefits from Water STAB damage boost. Your other alternative is the stronger Rock Smash—which is not ideal since it only charges 7 points of energy in 1.5 seconds—and a great Azumarill in PVP relies on strong Charged Attacks, not the other way around.

Now—the second option is up to your preference: Hydro Pump or Play Rough (total damage and energy overview below).

I’ve seen Play Rough much more often than Hydro Pump, mainly because it’s much quicker to launch, costing 15 fewer energy points (which would require an additional 3 Bubble hits to charge up). Power is excellent as well, dealing the same damage as Ice Beam. The main issue here is, it doesn’t land super effective hits too often.

Hydro Pump has its usage—and I personally use this move on my Azumarill in Pokémon GO. It’s the most potent Water-type attack in the game, dealing a whopping 130 power points. On top of that, it will knock out many popular Pokémon in the Great League running rampage: Stunfisk, Galarian Stunfisk, Alolan Marowak—and any other Fire Pokémon insight.

On top of that, a neutral hit will also guarantee to almost hit the other popular Water/Ground types out, such as Swampert and Whiscash.

The only issue is the high energy requirement. Usually, I’m only able to store up to save for a Hydro Pump when Azumarill faces another Water-type, where it has time to charge up energy while eating up a few non-effective hits.

Final PVP rating: 10/10

Best Azumarill counter in Pokémon GO

Azumarill is a dual Water/Fairy type—and thus, it’s weak to three types: Electric, Grass, and Poison.

The most popular Electric Pokémon running around is Galvantula, which is a dual Bug/Electric-type. Thus, Azumarill’s Ice Beam can knock it out in one super effective unmerciful hit—so use your shields wisely. Zapdos, Lanturn, and Magnezone also are other options.

Popular Grass counters for Azumarill in Pokémon GO include Abomasnow, Meganium, and Venusaur—which—all can get hit pretty hard with an Ice Beam—so if you see an Azumarill running around, save at least one shield. If you’re running Meganium or Venusaur, be sure to run Frenzy Plant—available when you teach a Grass-type starter with an Elite Charged TM. It’s the best Grass-type move, with low energy requirement and high attack power.

And then there’s the Poison type. There’s Venusaur, mentioned above. The only other option I ever encounter is Muk or Alolan Muk, which would run Poison Jab or Sludge Wave, respectively. But due to the many Ground-type attackers running around, you end up failing elsewhere (remember, your opponent can always switch out).

IMO, the best counters for Azumarill actually don’t fall into these three types. There are two main threats from what I’ve seen in the current metagame: Cresselia with Grass Knot and Hypno with Electric Punch.

Is Shiny Azumarill available in Pokémon GO?

Yes, it is—and the beloved blue water rabbit Pokémon is turned yellow. Here’s what a shiny Azumarill looks like in Pokémon GO.
